Young entrepreneurs across South Lanarkshire are being encouraged to showcase their talents in the annual Shark Reef competition.

S3 pupils from schools across the area have until 2 September 2026 to submit their business ideas for the popular initiative, which challenges participants to develop concepts with a social or environmental impact.

The call comes following the success of last year’s competition, where Calderside Academy was crowned overall winner at the 2025 Shark Reef Final.

Their winning entry, Root n Rise, was designed as a social enterprise.

Head of Enterprise and Sustainable Development, Alison Brown, said: “Their innovative idea, combining sustainability with social enterprise, impressed judges and highlighted the creativity and ambition of young people across South Lanarkshire.

“A total of 11 schools took part in the previous programme, with pupils pitching their ideas to a panel of experienced business leaders. The standard of entries was extremely high, with judges commenting that they would have been willing to invest in any of the projects.

“Building on that success, Shark Reef 2026 is now underway, offering a fresh cohort of pupils the opportunity to explore entrepreneurship as a career path.

“Participants will receive support from Education Resources, Business Gateway Lanarkshire and local industry experts as they develop business plans and prepare for a live final event.”

The programme is designed to help young people build key skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and presentation, while demonstrating how business can be a force for positive change in communities.

Schools interested in taking part are encouraged to register their interest as soon as possible by emailing the Business Support Team.
